AMD R9 295X - A dual-GPU card with hybrid cooling?


     I always take rumors with a pinch of salt, but this picture looks legit enough to be true; still, read this with your skepticism hat ready. Apparently someone posted supposed pictures and specifications of the dual GPU card on chinese forum Chiphell. As we can see from the picture, there's a pre-filled water cooler attached to the card, alongside a fan situated at the center of the card; this suggests that the card will feature hybrid cooling. Seeing how past AMD cards performed in terms of heat, there definitely is a need for a more efficient cooling method.

     Looking at the entire design of the card, it definitely looks a bit too funky, perhaps they should had stay with the 7990 aesthetics instead of going with what closely resembles the aesthetics of cards from the green camp. Well, we will just have to wait and see.

Ken's Take on AMD's GPU Rebranding


    AMD has recently revealed it's new refresh of GPU lineups dubbed the R9 and R7 series. Departing from the long used "HDXXX0" names, AMD has decided to switch things up a little. So, as all of us consumers can see, the R7 is basically the HD77XX series while R9 being the HD78XX & HD79XX series. If you didn't understand a single word I just said, the higher the number the better.

    So what is this rebranding stuff? Does this mean this new lineup is actually "new"? Well it's a new name but basically its just a rehash except for the R9 290X which runs on a new architecture.

    As you can see here, the R7 260X is a stepped up HD7790, the R9 270X a stepped up HD7870 and the R9 280X (presumably) a stepped up HD7950. 

    So how about the R9 290X? How much better would it fare against an HD7970? Will it be... the Nvidia TITAN killer? We would have to wait and see. If you are building a machine for yourself now, I would suggest that you wait out a while for the prices of the HD series cards to drop.... but seeing that the old Nvidia cards still see no sign of price cuts, I would take my own suggestion with a grain of salt... a lot of salt. Oh and remember, grab the HD7970 for sheer performance, and the new R9 290X for bragging rights. xD

AMD Reveals HD7990 "The Fastest Graphics Card in The World"


We all had heard about it, and finally AMD unveiled it's long in the making graphics card at GDC 2013, the AMD Radeon HD 7990.

Sporting one of the coolest looking coolers (DID YOU SEE WHAT I DID?) on a reference graphics card, how well does it perform without overclocking? Be damned if I knew. Truth is we have actually seen 7990s from 3rd party manufacturers, and seeing the reference card design, it is much better than the custom coolers, with more accents of red than black.

How good is the performance though? We could probably refer to the Club 3D 7990 but I wouldn't speculate that it would be better than the 3rd party one.

Down the break, hoping for more good news from GDC 2013.
